Social workers are qualified health professionals who provide practical support, counselling, advocacy, referrals and information to individuals and their families. Social workers can act as a facilitator between individuals and community services to access required resources including recreation, daily living support, housing, employment, health, welfare and other community resources. Social workers empower individuals to develop and use the skills and resources needed to resolve social and other problems, whilst also addressing the social structures that act as a barrier to individuals resolving their problems independently. Social workers are able to assist individuals specifically in applying for government housing, Centrelink entitlements, NDIS as well as supporting people to solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. Social workers provide both the practical assistance to navigate the complexities of various systems whilst also providing the therapeutic support to overcome any challenges to living a life of purpose and meaning.
